Chapter Eleven

Dravos stopped short behind Ravenna. “He’s one of the missing scientists?”

Ravenna glanced back at him and then immediately put her attention on the target. “Yeah, but not just any scientist—the one in charge. I’m waiting on answer, doctor.”

“I have as many questions as you do. Is that a Hirudian behind you?” Garsett was still on his knees, cowering. Something he’d never seen a human do. They were all entitled assholes who thought it their due to do whatever they wanted, especially those in the science division.

“I’m not here to be another experiment,” Dravos muttered. The words escaped him before he could stop himself. He’d been at the science division’s mercy for five long horrible years. Rage started to boil up, and he took a couple of deep breaths to try and calm himself.

“Hear that? Seems my Hirudian friend doesn’t like you too much, Garsett. Better stop worrying about your questions and start answering mine. Why would a Space Force Ops crew risk a dishonorable discharge to destroy your science vessel, the Perseus, and attempt to kill me?”

Dravos couldn’t blame Ravenna for wanting an explanation, though he imagined this man had very few to give her. He smelled of fear and dread, but at the news of the Perseus being destroyed, his countenance changed. Garsett stood up straight, no longer hunched down before them.

He tidied his jacket and looked Ravenna, barely sparing Dravos a stray glance. “Methusa, you can stand down. They destroyed the vessel, you say?”

Dravos found the curiosity and alteration in demeanor concerning. The terror leeched away, replaced with a bit of a hopeful scent. If hope had a smell, it was like fresh baked bread with the red grains of Hirudian wheat.

The jelly rifle powered down, the noise coming from above. Dravos angled his head upward and saw the weapon gripped firmly by a woman who looked at him with a calculated, cold gaze. He got a wave of mixed emotions from her odor, the biggest being anxiety.

“Yes, but not before we found a bunch of your crew dead. Murdered. Got any excuses for that?”

Garsett frowned before dragging a hand through his wispy, thinned white hair. “We can’t talk about this out here. Come with me.”

The scientist motioned for them to follow him inside the building and then disappeared down the hallway. The woman in the section of ceiling above them melted out sight as well.

“This could be a trap. We can’t trust anyone here,” he told her, not bothering to hide his dislike for the situation.

“And it could be exactly the answer to both our problems. You’ll get the chip removed, and I’ll have a chance to find out who killed Yve. Two asteroids, one missile.”

Singular focus. It appeared no matter how many conversations they had, her goal would always be about the love she lost. Even when he stood right in front of her confessing his secret. The pain in his chest started up again, an ache for such devotion from another person. To be treasured so much they would avenge him no matter the cost.
